Topic: RSS FeedDavis Supports Arts In California Schools - California governor Gray Davis - Brief Article
Dance Magazine, March, 2000 by Rita Felciano
In his 2000/2001 budget proposal, California Governor Gray Davis announced an increase of $10,125,000 for the California Arts Commission. This brings the current CAC budget to $30 million, coming closer to what many arts advocates have been pushing for, at least $1 per California resident. All of the money will be channeled into the arts through the state's Arts in Education programs, where it will be distributed through existing programs.
The current plans are to award Artists in Residence $3.5 million, Organizational Support $2.5 million, State Local Partners $1 million, Touring & Presenting $1 million, and Challenge grants $.5 million. A new program, Adopt a School, is scheduled to receive $1.5 million. The final allocation and distribution will be made when the legislature passes the budget, expected to happen sometime in June.
