Dance Magazine, May, 2003
Founded in 1933 by dancer/choreographer Ted Shawn to showcase his male dancers (see "Jacob's Pillow at 70," DANCE MAGAZINE, July 2002 page 25), the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival has grown; into an annual ten-week international dance festival with premieres and commissioned performances. Talks, films, exhibits, and publicly accessible historical archives complement the performances.
More than 100 career-track dancers study ballet, jazz, modern, and many international styles at The School at Jacob's Pillow annually--this year's instructors include ballet director Anna-Marie Holmes and jazz director Chet Walker--while aspiring arts administrators hone their skills in the Intern Program. Performers at this year's festival, which runs froth June through August, include Twyla Tharp Dance, Maria Pages Flamenco Republic, Mark Morris Dance Group, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, Rennie Harris PureMovement, Compania Nacional de Danza, Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Batoto Yetu, Stephen Petronio Company, and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. The festival is held in the Berkstfires, at 358 George Carter Road in Becket, Massachusetts. Call 413.243.0745 for tickets or see www.jacobspillow.org for more information.
