The bucolic selling of the Berkshires is an unlikely place for Zvi Gotheiner's new Territories, a piece about conflicts and polarized issues in today's world. "Leaving my homeland of Israel, I was making an attempt to avoid the ritualized games of superiority that concern tribes," Gotheiner said while working on the piece at MASS MoCA.
Territories involves ten dancers, composer Scott Killian, and video artist Jan Hartley. Gotheiner, known for his emotionally charged movement, said, "I want to be less territorial as a choreographer, and I'm still figuring it out. I'm the initiator of a task and then, who knows?" Commissioned by Jacob's Pillow, Territories marks Gotheiner's first appearance at the Massachusetts festival. "This is an amazing dance center," he said. "You feel like you are stepping into a family tree that comes from Ted Shawn, and you add a branch."
