YOU'VE HEARD THAT winters in Chicago are rugged? Believe it. We're talking multiple-inch snowfalls, temperatures well south of zero, and winds that will numb your jaws while they're knocking you flat. Conversely, the summers can be blistering and humid. If you're staying over the course of a year, bring clothes suited for a polar expedition, a weekend in Jamaica, and everything in between.
Rents for a studio apartment on the North Side start around $500 a month. Occasionally, cheaper rents can be found in some neighborhoods, but there is often a trade-off between safety and savings. Many dancers live together, sometimes four or five in a three-bedroom apartment, saving significant money.
A teaching job is a great way to make a living, but almost no studios offer health insurance, leading many dancers to work at flexible jobs for benefits, with minimal requirements such as Starbucks. Bear in mind that the higher-paying teaching jobs tend to be in the suburbs, making a car almost a necessity.
For classes and work in the city, however, Chicago has a fantastic public transportation system, including buses and the elevated train network, known as the el. The el is generally safe, but after dark it is advisable to sit in one of the front cars, with more people.
To find out about auditions for any of the companies listed here, call the contact numbers. Chicago is known as one of the friendliest cities of its size in America and the dance community is a great example of this. You can learn a lot from dancers who most likely have braved the difficulties of finding work performing and teaching.
