Dance Magazine, Nov, 1997 by Marilyn Hunt
The prestigious Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival added dance to its usual fare (July 24-25, 1997) by commissioning Contra-xions from Barcelonaborn composer Feliu Gasull with choreography by Tony Fabre, a charismatic and versatile dancer who has worked mainly in Europe. Purportedly calling on his experience with flamenco, the brief choreography was, rather jazz- and modern-based. Its unusual subject, a loving couple longing for a child, included practicing childbirth contractions together, but the brief piece came to an abupt and indeterminate end.
The strong, lithe Fabre, with his catlike jump, and his partner, Brit Rodkmund of Aalto Ballett Theater in Essen, Germany, with her waif-woman air, brought a tender and vulnerable quality to the piece that made one wish for more.
