NEW YORK CITY -- The Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund, which defines itself as "the largest private funder of arts and culture in the United States," has provided more than $24 million in dance grants since 1989.

In its 1992 annual report, the organization reported approving grants totaling more than $58 million, of which more than $5.5 million was allotted to dance. As a point of comparison, federal dance grants in 1992, according to a spokesman at the National Endowment for the Arts, equalled roughly $8.5 million out of a total grants budget of $154 million.
