A native of Leeds, England, geologist MICHAEL H. CARR ("What Became of the Water on Mars?" page 32) has devoted a long career to the exploration of Earth's nearest neighbors. In 1962 he joined the United States Geological Survey. Since then, he has worked on the Apollo missions, on Mariner 9, and on the Viking and Pathfinder missions to , Mars.

Carr is a member of the team overseeing the operation of the two rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, scheduled to land on Mars this January. He is the author of The Surface of Mars (Yale University Press, 1984) and Water on Mars (Oxford University Press, 1996).
