Misting in action

Natural History, April, 2003 by W.D. Benton

In "Grain Gain," ["Samplings," 2/03], Stephan Reebs states: "Methane is the second most damaging greenhouse gas in the atmosphere." Indeed, methane is the second most damaging greenhouse gas governed by the Kyoto Protocol, but the major greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are, in order of their warming effect, water vapor, carbon dioxide, and then methane.

Like carbon dioxide and methane, water vapor has many anthropogenic sources, from the burning of hydrocarbons to the excess evaporation from reservoirs, lakes created by dams, and rice paddies.
