The host of this championship tournament was the Mikunguni bao club, one of about sixteen such clubs on the island of Zanzibar. The grandmasters of Zanzibar also compete in tournaments with representatives from nearby Pemba Island and from Dar es Salaam, on the Tanzanian mainland. The genius exhibited in this region will awe anyone who has attempted to learn the game.
Whether or not mancala originated in Africa, that continent has assuredly given us some of the world's most extraordinary players.
