National Catholic Reporter, Jan 25, 2002
Vatican envoy Cardinal Roger Etchegaray greets villagers as he arrives to celebrate Mass in Tenejapa in the Mexican state of Chiapas Jan. 13. Etchegaray preached reconciliation during his tour to observe peacekeeping efforts. Many villages in Chiapas are troubled by political and religious tensions, complicated by the lingering Zapatista conflict that began with an armed indigenous uprising in 1994 and a government-conducted massacre of Zapatista supporters in 1997.
Referring to the conflict, the cardinal stressed the need for dialogue, justice and reconciliation.
