The New York Times, in an April 19 article about the pope's visit to Park East Synagogue in Manhattan, reported on a light moment in the press gallery. "Jewish men and women sat in the pews to the left, the men wearing white yarmulkes. In the pews to the right were a group of Roman Catholic cardinals and bishops wearing red skullcaps. From the balcony above, where the news media sat, their respective caps suggested the beginning of a game of checkers."
