Farmers and fishing groups denounce agricultural patents

National Catholic Reporter, Nov 6, 1998 by Teresa Malcolm

Catholic church-sponsored organic farmers and fisherfolk in Indonesia say local seeds and natural pesticides are owned in common and should not be patented by individuals or companies.

This and other resolutions were adopted by 7a delegates from 36 organic farmer and fishing groups in a national meeting in Klaten, Indonesia, to mark 1998 World Food Day Oct. 17.

The resolutions also demanded that the government revoke laws unfair to farmers and fisherfolk and called for the government to be held accountable for ecological destruction due to its promotion of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides to raise farm production.

To implement the spirit of the resolutions, delegates agreed to use local seeds and to organize seeds banks in their respective farm groups.

Delegates also agreed to create an alternative market for their organic farm products. Marcus P. Saryoto, secretary of the farmers and fisherfolk meeting, said that organic farmers could sell high quality produce directly to consumers at fair prices through the alternative market.

Briefs, gathered from news services, correspondents and staff, are compiled and edited by Teresa Malcolm.
