Fr. Timothy E. Svea, a suspended priest of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, pleaded guilty Feb. 25 to sexual abuse of a minor in Marathon County District Court, for actions committed while he was at the institute's location in Wausau, Wis.

Svea, 39, was charged with second-degree sexual assault of a child, fourth-degree sexual assault of a child, indecent exposure to a child, false imprisonment and exhibiting pornography to a minor. Some of the charges were dropped in a plea agreement. The offenses date from April 1999 through February 2000.

He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with all but 18 months stayed. He will have work-release privileges while imprisoned.

Svea also must register with the state as a sex offender, cannot have contact with any named victim or unsupervised contact with any children, have a psychiatric evaluation, undergo testing for HW and pay restitution for his victims' counseling.

Svea had served for a time as U.S. superior of the institute, a religious community that provides the Tridentine Mass in the La Crosse diocese.
