Forgiven

National Catholic Reporter, April 27, 2007 by Susanne L. Marsala

"And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."

--Matthew 28:20

Forgiven

You, in white at the window
   as if waiting for me.
   I had expected wings.
   Asleep, unable to dream,
   I desire something
but have forgotten how to ask.
Then, you take my hand and
into the still, quiet pool we go.
The water is at my waist
   before I remember to breathe.
   Reaching the resonant depths,
   the pale green water ripples
   in my wake.
I am naked now and swim,
   wanting to touch the light.
   Above me, you smile.
   Your hand finds mine and
   brings me to the surface.
   The wind, your breath,
   warms my skin.
Clothed at last in your humanity,
you take me to the table
   and feed me.
   Your perfect feast of forgiveness.
