Jose Hernandez

National Catholic Reporter, June 4, 2004

> Jose Hernandez, an engineer at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, has been selected to start astronaut training with NASA. He may be one of the first to return to the moon. One of four children in a migrant farming family from Mexico, Hernandez--who didn't learn English until he was 12 years old-spent much of his childhood on what he calls "the California circuit," picking strawberries and cucumbers on farms from southern California to Stockton, Calif., from March to November.
