The Dalai Lama

National Catholic Reporter, Nov 5, 2004

> Tibet might benefit by remaining with China, the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, told TIME magazine from his exile home in India. "Tibet is backward. It's a big land, rich in natural resources, but we lack the technology or expertise [to exploit them]. So if we remain within China, we might get a greater benefit, provided it respects our culture and environment and gives us some kind of guarantee." India has hosted the Dalai Lama since he fled Tibet in 1959 amid a failed uprising against Chinese rule.
