National Catholic Reporter, Oct 12, 2001
DIANA HAYES, associate professor of theology at Jesuit-run Georgetown University in Washington, received the 2001 U.S. Catholic Award at a Sept. 21 luncheon at Loyola University in Chicago. U.S. Catholic magazine, published by the Claretian Missionaries, has given the award since 1978 to an individual or group for furthering the cause of women in the Catholic church.
Hayes was recognized for her pioneering work as a "womanist theologian," a theology she defines as "of, by and for black women, which seeks to build a new community of faith that would eradicate racism, sexism, genderism, classism and homophobia."
