DONATIONS - donations down in charity fundraising drive, Illinois - Brief Article

National Catholic Reporter, Oct 12, 2001

DONATIONS for the CROP Walk held in Woodstock, Ill., this fall were down by nearly $5,000 thanks in part to the local bishop. CROP Walks throughout the country assist relief agencies in foreign countries and local charities. Before the event, the diocese, led by Rockford, Ill., Bishop Thomas Doran, sent a letter to church leaders that said they should not be involved.

The Northwest Herald reports that the bishop was apparently reacting against the event's sponsor, Church World Service, which had invited Faye Wattleton, a former longtime director of Planned Parenthood, to speak at one of its events.
