The Reason Why We Sing: Community Song with Alice Parker

National Catholic Reporter, July 14, 1995 by Michael K. Holleran

This is not at all the case with two splendid videos from Liturgical Training Publications. "The Reason Why We Sing" features Alice Parker. Its 20 minutes are packed with penetrating commentary and song right from the opening sequence in which the music of creation is presented as pointing to God. The video's effect can be ascribed in no small measure to Alice Parker herself, whether in voice-over or in actual practice sessions. She sparkles and brims with the heart, skill and insight that have become her trademark.

One unforgettable moment, in which she transforms the plodding execution of a familiar hymn into a heavenly strain of Mozartean lightness, is especially breathtaking. One of the songs muses, "Sometimes I may be crying and nothing's even wrong," and I found it to be true of this reviewer as I watched. I suppose heartfelt religious ardor in liturgy, combined with the heart-piercing flight of good music, is simply a potent mixture.
