Coadjutors: new wrinkle in picking bishops

Archbishop John R. Quinn, 66, who will be retiring as head of the San Francisco archdiocese early next year, has been granted a fellowship at Oxford University for the 1996 spring term. He has also been appointed Centennial Lecturer for Oxford's Campion Hall for 1996.

In a statement explaining why he asked Pope John Paul II to appoint a coadjutor for San Francisco, Quinn said, "I was appointed a bishop at the age of 38. I have served as a bishop for almost 30 years. In these turbulent times no corporate CEO or university president remains under the pressure of office for anywhere near that length of time."

The former president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops said that upon completion of his stay at Oxford, he will return to San Francisco and take up residence at St. Patrick Seminary.
