Archbishop Weakland calls Mother Angelica's statements 'disgraceful.' - Aug 14, 1993 telecast denoucing Catholic liberalism

Archbishop Rembert G. Weakland of Milwaukee has called Mother Angelica's recent denunciation of the "liberal church" in America one of the most "disgraceful, un-Christian, offensive and divisive diatribes I have ever heard."

In an Aug. 14 telecast Mother Angelica, founder and head of the EWTN, criticized the "destructive force" of the liberal church during the past 30 years. "For a half-hour she ranted and raved about all the |abuses' since Vatican Council II, according to her own personal judgment, which of course she equates with that of the Holy Father," Weakland wrote in his archdiocesan newspaper, the Catholic Herald. "She invited everyone who disagreed with her to leave the church."

Mother Angelica's commentary was prompted by the use of a woman in the role of Jesus in a dramatization of the Way of the Cross, as part of World Youth Day. She called it "blasphemous" and said it was another example of 30 years of "tricks" and "deceit" by liberals "constantly pushing anti-God, anti-Catholic and pagan ways" into the Catholic church.
