Parks & Recreation, Nov, 2001

Bill Walters, National Park Service deputy regional director in the Pacific West Region, has been selected by NPS director Fran Mainella to become the new associate to the director.

In his new role, Walters will concentrate on maintaining liaison with organizational elements within the NPS to ensure timely and high quality action by the NPS. Walters will also confer with the NPS, Congress, and other outside groups on matters which come before Mainella. In addition, he will be an ex-officio member of the National Leadership Council and Regional/ Deputy Regional Directors Group. "I don't really have words to describe how highly I have valued his counsel, his good humor and his dedication to the region and the Service," said John Jarvis, the regional director of the Pacific West Region. "I shall miss him terribly," he said. Before serving in this new position, Walters was assistant director for National Recreation Programs in the Washington NPS office and was the director of State Parks in Indiana for two years.
