A glimpse at some of the country's newest park and recreation projects -- as well as who's bringing them to fruition.

THE GRINDING EDGE SKATEPARK ORLAND PARK, ILL.

Going up: Hitchcock Design Group, of Naperville, Ill., was chosen to provide critical design refinement and construction administration to this two-acre sculptured concrete park for skateboarders and inline skaters.

What they're saying: "This is truly a trend-setting facility for the Midwest. We foresee other communities standing up, taking notice, and following our lead." -- Bill Inman, Vice President, HDG

Digs: Skatepark amenities include a slalom course, banked curves, ramps, bowls, a street-skating plaza, and 9,000 linear feet of skating trails.

Projected completion: Opened July 1999.

Who do they think they are?: Hitchcock Design Group's previous projects include the Fox RiverWalk in Waukesha, Wis., and the renovation of a health care campus at the Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Ill.
