Cocoa shell mulch - Product Roundup

Parks & Recreation, Jan, 2003

Vitasoil cocoa shell mulch is a 100% organic ground cover that has become increasingly popular with landscapers. Unlike wood-based ground covers that remove nitrogen from the soil as they break down, this mulch from the LaBudde Group becomes nutrient-rich humus, improving soil structure and its ability to retain moisture. After cocoa shell mulch has been spread at a depth of 2" and watered, a natural gum is activated, bonding the shells into a loosely-knit, porous mat that slows moisture loss and retards weed growth. The texture of the shells also deters slugs and snails to help prevent plant damage.
