Surplus river access site becomes waterfront park

Parks & Recreation, Feb, 2005

The community of Smithland, Ky., will have a scenic waterfront park along the Ohio River, thanks to the efforts of the National Park Service's Federal Lands to Parks program. About 90 acres were gifted to Livingston County for recreation and public use. Formerly acquired and developed by the U.S.

Army Corps of Engineers for boating access, the property will be operated as a community riverfront park and will be further developed with picnic tables and shelters. Currently, a boat launching ramp and open space comprise the park. Valued at an estimated $800,000, the property is significant because it provides Livingston County with its first boating access site. NPS Federal Lands to Parks negotiated the transfer.
