Cable TV group aids historic site

Parks & Recreation, Feb, 2006

The South Carolina Cable Television Association (SCCTA) donated $100,000 to aid in the South Carolina State Park Service's renovation of the Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site, and for educational efforts throughout parks in the state.

Half of SCCTA's contribution will outfit the classroom facility in Charles Towne Landing's new visitor center. The other $50,000 will be used for the state's Discover Carolina programs at 18 other state parks and at the South Carolina State House.

"Our association is proud to continue our tradition of helping out the schools in the communities we serve and of furthering education statewide," said Kathy Brabson, SCCTA's chairman of the board.

Discover Carolina is a program that combines state park activities and state house tours with Department of Education curriculum standards. The program allows students to learn about math, history and biology in historic and educational settings.

The Charles Towne Landing is the site of the 1670 founding of the first successful English colony in the Carolinas. The park service's extensive renovation of this site includes a new visitor's center that can accommodate various educational activities, encouraging the kinds of hands-on learning that more than 25,000 school children enjoyed at Charles Towne Landing last year alone.
