Souvenir stations

Parks & Recreation, March, 2006

The interpretive panels for the Falkirk Locks in Falkirk, Scotland are deceptively straightforward. Beyond the informative graphics and well-written text, notice the applied dimensional details and the rubbing station on each panel, where a visitor can rub a pencil over a three-dimensional section of a medallion (like a child rubbing over a penny) in order to assemble a unique souvenir of their visit to all six stations. The Wheel, since it's opening in 2002, has become one of Scotland's premier tourist attractions. It transfers boats between the Union Canal and the Forth & Clyde Canal about 115 ft. below, using no more energy than two tea kettles. This innovative exhibit was designed by Aaron Lawton Associates of Pitlochery, Scotland and the panels were manufactured by iZone of Temple, Texas. iZone, (888)464-9663, www.izoneimaging.com.
