Parks and recreation programs get America healthy - Tip-Off - Brief Article

Parks & Recreation, April, 2003

Enhanced access to places for physical activity combined with informational outreach activities is key to reducing the obesity epidemic in America, according to Vice Admiral Richard Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.S.U.S. Surgeon General.

Build on these efforts by holding a community celebration for National Trails Day this June 7. It's the perfect opportunity to address this important public health strategy. National Trails Day, American Hiking Society's signature trail awareness program, inspires more than one million trail enthusiasts to flock to their favorite trails to discover, learn about and celebrate trails. It's the perfect excuse to build awareness for trail and health, foster volunteerism and build community spirit.

For National Trails Day 2003, the theme is "Healthy Trails, Healthy People. "For help hosting an event (or to register your event), go to www.americanhiking.org, or contact the National Trails Day Coordinator at 301-565-6704, ext. 208 or ntd@americanhiking.org.
