Affluent teens are more likely to drink and use drugs, according to research published in Child Development. Even as early as middle school, kids in affluent neighborhoods are turning to substances to deal with pressures associated with college entrance and social isolation. Teen substance use is on the rise in suburbia, and is higher in many cases than in lower-income urban areas.
