After-school programs support children's literacy development - NRPA Youth Services

Parks & Recreation, April, 2003

Homework help in after-school programs can benefit the literacy development of children, especially for those whose parents can't help because of language difficulties. But innovative after-school programs can foster literacy in other ways, too--offering a variety of literacy-rich activities like book clubs, dramatic plays, board games, books on tape and calligraphy, according to a recent University of Chicago study.

For help with program resources and guidance to support such activities, go to www.chapin. uchicago.edu.
