Pesky fire ants
Parks & Recreation, April, 2006 by Patrick Mehr
I enjoyed your January issue here in South Florida. As a youngster in the South I remember all too well the fire ants in my grandmother's yard. Ouch! Now that I'm in Maine, I thought those pests were long gone.
But I'd like to add Maine to your list of states [mentioned in your article on fire ants] to have this problem. We are blessed with Shackford Head State Park in Easport, but cursed with the little red devils. The story goes that they were brought over from Europe on a load of materials to this sea coast town. Who knows, but they are here in abundance now.
