Living in America

Parks & Recreation, June, 2004

Searching for the place in America that is "most livable?" The Partners for Livable Communities, a national non-profit group, has ended the mystery. 0n April 20, the organization designated 30 cities and towns "America's Most Livable Communities."

The communities were evaluated on their strategy, vision and actions in preparing for changes in the economic environment. Judges also looked at 10 key areas where the cities needed to show leadership: city center, housing, regionalism, tourism, leadership, neighborhoods, environment, new economy, human development and finance.

In all of the cities, regardless of size and budget, parks and recreational facilities contributed to the success of the community.

Out of the 30 communities named, California claimed six honored cities, while Michigan was home to three. For a complete list of "America's Most Livable Communities," visit www.mostlivable.org.
