Helping hands needed for National Public Lands Day

Parks & Recreation, June, 2005

National Public Lands Day will be held Sept. 24. Since its inception in 1994, the national clean-up day has attracted tens of thousands of volunteers to hundreds of sites across America to clean up their public lands, waters and shorelines. Each year the event helps fix up famous locations where Americans hike, bike, climb, swim, explore, picnic or just plain relax--such as San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, one of the most heavily visited urban parks; and the National Monument to the Forefathers in Plymouth, Mass. This year, organizers would like to surpass last year's totals of 80,000 volunteers. Seven-year sponsor Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc., will assist volunteers with the use of hybrid vehicles for transport to and from the sites.

Those interested in volunteering can find local sites by calling (800) 865-8337 or visiting www.publiclandsday.org.
