Susan E. Abele, Executive Director of the Lancaster Recreation Commission, was honored by the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society (PRPS) at its annual conference in Champion, PA. Abele received the Fred M. Coombs Honor Award for dedication to and unwavering support of parks and recreation efforts in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The highest honor given by PRPS, it is awarded annually to someone who has rendered outstanding service, distinctive leadership, and meritorious service to the recreation profession. This award recognizes Susan for her administrative ability, high moral standards, and strong commitment to recreation services. She served as a consultant on the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and National Resources' (DCNR) first peer-to-peer project in 1992 and her expertise has resulted in the creation of six new regional recreation commissions under DCNR's careful watch. Abele is a 1970 graduate of the Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor's degree in Community Recreation and Parks and holds a Master's degree in Public Administration, also from Penn State. She has been Executive Director of the Lancaster Recreation Commission since 1987.
