Parks & Recreation, August, 2002

The Marienville ATV and Motorcycle Trail, in the Allegheny National Forest (Pa.), received an Achievement Award from the Coalition for Recreational Trails for Maintenance and Rehabilitation, Long Distance.

Boyds, Md., chose a park over development. When Washington, D.C.'s sprawl and crawl came knocking, residents in this suburb didn't answer. Instead, working with the Trust for Public Land, landowner Michael Rubin purchased 1,700 acres, and transferred 800 of them immediately to the state of Maryland for protection. The land is now managed by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission as the Hoyles Mill Conservation Park, to be used for activities such as hiking and horseback riding. The remaining 900 acres have a conservation easement to permanently protect the land from development.

NRPA members were recognized for excellence at the 23rd Annual Delaware Recreation and Park Society conference in March. NRPA member Laura Madara was recognized for her leadership efforts as past president of the society. NRPA agency member Delaware Division of Parks & Recreation had numerous employee recognized for excellence. In addition to Madara, these include Kyle Gulbronson, who was recognized as the outstanding member for dedication to service to the society; and Carol Baxter, who earned the George T. Sargisson Fellow Award, the most prestigious award for a professional in parks and recreation in Delaware.
