Philips Lighting-four unions
Four unions jointly negotiated 3-year contracts with North American Philips Lighting Group for 3,000 employees at plants in Fairmont, WV, South Plainfield, NJ, and Miami, FL. The unions' bargaining was coordinated by a conference board of unions, which oversees bargaining with Westinghouse Electric Corp. Also aiding in the negotiations at North American Philips was the AFL-CIO'S Industrial Union Department. The four unions are the Electronic Workers, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and the Flint Glass Workers, all members of the AFL-CIO, and the independent United Electrical Workers.
Settlement terms included specified wage increases totaling 55 cents an hour; lumpsum payments totaling $500; continuation of semiannual cost-of-living adjustments; pension rates ranging from $18 to $23 a month for each year of service; $1 million lifetime major medical coverage; increased education and retraining payments; and adoption of a provision requiring the company to give 6 months notice of plant closings.
