Guidance on plant closing - Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act

Nation's Business, Oct, 1988 by Joan C. Szabo

Guidance On Plant Closing Employers tackling the formidable tasks of interpreting and abiding by the recently enacted law on plant-closing notification can find help in a newly released publication from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

The booklet, "The New Federal `Plant Closings' Law: What Employers Should Know," explains the law's requirements, the exceptions, exemptions and penalties. It also includes answers for the most common questions that employers ask about the new law.

Under the law, known as the "Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act," employers will be required to give workers 60 days' notice before closing a facility or an "operating unit," or before implementing a mass layoff. Beginning Feb. 4, 1989, all plant closings or layoffs--even many affecting as few as 50 workers--will be covered by the new law.

Companies wanting to become familiar with the provisions of the new law can obtain single copies of the Chamber's booklet free. The bulk-order price is $20 per dozen for Chamber members and $33 for nonmembers. To place your order, call toll-free 1-800-638-6582. In Maryland, the number is 1-800-352-1450. Please request publication #0100.
