Since they were introduced three years ago, printers produced by Canon Systems Inc. have been among the dominant players what's called the small-office/home-office, or "SOHO," market Products engineered for this market generally perform well enough and are durable enough for use in small businesses, but they are inexpensive enough to appeal to home-based sole proprietors.

A new line of inkjet printers from Canon meets the SOHO requirements. The printers also come with software that makes them a blast for home use. This software, which comes on a CD, makes it easy to print everything from greeting cards to T-shirts to cross-stitch sewing patterns. Canon hopes this are/software combination will define a new market that it calls "SOHOME," or small office/home.

Based on continuing positive experiences with the midrange product in the line, the BJC-4100, Canon's hopes likely will be realized. The BJC-4100 provides nearly photorealistic color as well as crisp black-and-white printing at a resolution of 360 by 720 dots per inch. The printer has flawlessly handled everything from legal-and letter-size envelopes and paper in many weights to film, transparencies, fabric, T-shirt transfers, and more. With a 100-sheet or 15-envelope capacity, seven built-in bit-mapped fonts, a two-year warranty, and a retail price of about $350, the BJC-4100 printer clearly is suitable for moderate business use.
