Beyond Tortoises: Saving Rare Species

The desert tortoise is one of 25 species that the National Wildlife Federation is highlighting in its "Keep the Wild Alive" campaign. This is a multi-year effort to enhance support for protecting imperiled wildlife.

The 25 target species represent a cross-section of the challenges and promises of endangered species protection.

"The desert tortoise, like many of the species we selected, is facing multiple threats," says Jeff Flocken, NWF's endangered species outreach coordinator. "By pointing out these threats, and working with local communities, we hope to help these species and all the imperiled wildlife that share their habitat."

The campaign will focus attention on the 25 species through various conservation, media and educational initiatives, including special materials for classroom use. For more information about "Keep the Wild Alive," visit the Federation's web site: www.nwf.org/wildalive.>
