"I Wish I Had That Mandolin," performed by Kevin Welch with his musical partners Kieran Kane and Fats Kaplin, reveals the value and power of a cherished object too quickly sold, and a lesson learned to late about its true worth. In Welch's version of this archetypal tale, the song 's protagonist pawns the mandolin his brother gave him in an attempt to win his lover's heart only to discover that she was unfaithful, and that he is now without the one gift that he could have looked to in this time of need. "I Wish I Had That Mandolin" is on the trio "s eponymous album, Kane Welch Kaplin, released by Compass Records (#4464; available from 916 19th Avenue South, Nashville, TN 37212; Ph: 800-757-2277; Web: <www.compassrecords.com>).
