Night Science for Kids: Exploring the World after Dark

Science News, August 7, 2004 by Terry Krautwurst

Great for camping and summer nights when the kids are up late, this activity guide explores what goes on when most people sleep. Children discover how to interpret the flashing signals of fireflies and find out how those insects generate their light. A section on bats describes various species and offers insight into the phrase "blind as a bat." Activities include building a house for a screech owl and planting a moonlight-moth garden.

After a through examination of critters, Krautwurst offers activities and lessons on viewing the night sky, including picking out constellations and understanding the phases of the moon. Each activity is bolstered by a wealth of background data. Recommended for age 9 and up. Originally published in Canada in 2003. Lark Bks, 2004, 144 p., color photos/illus., hardcover, $19.95.
