PAPER OR PLASTIC: Searching for Solutions to an Overpackaged World

DANIEL IMHOFF

"Paper or plastic?" is a familiar refrain in the grocery store, but more than that, it represents a choice with profound implications for the world's environment and economy. About one-third of the solid waste in the United States is packaging materials. This book explores ways to address the negative side of packaging, including manufacturers' ongoing attempts to change packages so that they take up fewer resources and produce fewer toxic by-products. The author looks at curbside recycling, biodegradable plastics, and new types of reusable containers. Finally, Imhoff offers advice on what his readers can do to limit the use of one-time, wasteful packaging. Sierra Club Books, 2005, 176 p., b&w and color photos, paperback, $16.95.
