The Redskins' passing game is in deeper trouble than it was when the season ended. WR Rod Gardner has been told he's not in the team's plans, and WR Laveranues Coles has told the team he no longer wants to be in its plans. Coach Joe Gibbs says he would be happy to go into next season with James Trash and Taylor Jacobs as his starting wideouts, but that would be dangerous.

Thrash is limited as a receiver; his value lies in his work ethic and ability on special teams. He has excellent straight-ahead speed but isn't particularly elusive and doesn't come out of his breaks with exceptional quickness. Jacobs is a No. 3 receiver, at best. He runs good routes but only has average speed and needs to develop greater confidence. If Coles doesn't return, the team will have to find a quality wide receiver. To do so in the free-agent market would be costly, but the team might get some cap room if Coles gives up part of his bonus money.
