2005 Ad

Sporting News, The,  March 18, 2005  by Kyle Veltrop

Louisville must continually make the extra pass. The Cardinals have averaged just 11.3 assists in their four losses.... Rugged Charlotte PF Curtis Withers has played well enough to be considered for second- or third-team All-American honors, but the player who has made the 49ers go down the stretch is senior SF Eddie Basden. He can slash, shoot a high percentage, rebound, pass and play defense-he's in the nation's top five in steals. SG Brendan Plavich is one-dimensional offensively-but he'll fire from anywhere beyond the arc.... Cincinnati lacks great size, but it contests every shot-PF Jason Maxiell alone has had three games with seven or more blocked shots. Maxiell and PF Eric Hicks are the leading scorers and do damage around the basket. G/F Armein Kirkland, PG Jihad Muhammad and SG Nick Williams all fire freely from long range.... DePaul had some bad early losses, but it rallied in conference play. Offensively, it is led by wide-body PF Quemont Greer. PG Sammy Mejia is a tough matchup because of his size. ... Memphis SF Rodney Carney can be an explosive scorer, and PG Darius Washington is one of the nation's top freshmen, but the Tigers need to win the conference tourney-in Memphis-to make the NCAA field.... UAB likes to run and press and has a nice player in SG Donell Taylor, but the Blazers stumbled down the stretch.
