Wake-up call: why Wake Forest will be the last one standingplus 64 other tournament tidbits and trends to consider
Sporting News, The, March 25, 2005 by Mike DeCourcy
Tom Green's seasons as Fairleigh Dickinson head coach. Green's career has been a modern anomaly. Coaches do not stay at mid-major schools for this length of time. They move up, or they're moved out. This is only Green's second tournament trip since 1988, but he has averaged 16 wins a year.
Central Florida's average victory total in the post-twin years. Losing Joey and Stevie Graham as transfers to Oklahoma State after the 2001-02 season should have been devastating for a program at UCF's level. Instead, head coach Kirk Speraw and lead recruiter Tom Schuberth quickly reconstructed the Golden Knights' roster.
Sean May's career-best rebounds in a March 6 victory against Duke. He closed the regular season with eight consecutive games of 10 or more rebounds.
First-time Final Four coaches since 1990. Only three won titles: Jim Harrick (UCLA 1995), Tubby Smith (Kentucky 1998) and Jim Calhoun (UConn 1999) an ominous stat for Bruce Weber, (Illinois 2005).
Regular-season games Utah center Andrew Bogut played without foul trouble after fouling out of the season opener. He averaged 2.2 personals. The Utes need all of Bogut they can get.
Career NCAA Tournament victories by Rick Pitino. Only one came with Louisville, in 2003. Led by juniors Francisco Garcia and Taquan Dean, this could be the team to change that--and maybe deliver him to his fifth Final Four.
Feet between the foul line and midcourt line--that's Illinois' turf. The Illini's ability to force turnovers in that area and convert them into baskets makes them dominant. Get the ball safely past the foul line against Illinois, and you've got a chance to win.
Years since Indiana finished with a perfect record as the NCAA champion. It might be another 29 before a team does it again.
Minutes averaged by Oklahoma guard David Godbold over the final six regular-season games. Last spring, OU tried to talk him into walking on before coach Kelvin Sampson finally offered a scholarship. After Godbold became a starter February 16, the Sooners won seven straight.
Gonzaga forward Adam Morrison's 3-point percentage. He's a special player, but the Larry Bird comparisons will seem curious until he improves from the outside.
-34 The last three at-large invitations tend to be ceremonial. In the past five years, only four of the 15 teams in this category advanced.
-37 The first three teams left out tend to leave the party angry. They frequently turn into first-round NIT victims, as Utah State did last season.
Days Mississippi State went without Winsome Frazier. The Bulldogs went 4-4 after he broke his foot and haven't regained their form even since the return of their top perimeter scorer and defender.
Larry Krystkowiak's age when hired last May to coach his alma mater. Krystkowiak, a former NBA player, led Montana to the Big Sky championship in his first season.
Minutes of basketball Oakland coach Greg Kampe needed to diagnose Illinois. After losing to the mini by 31 points, Kampe declared them the best team he'd ever coached against--including 2000 national champion Michigan State. That was before Illinois wrecked Gonzaga and Wake Forest in consecutive games. "They share the ball and pass the ball better than any team I've ever coached against," Kampe said.
