Sporting News, The,  April 15, 2005  by Don Miller,  Paul Ettlinger,  Jonathan Smith,  Jay Hester,  Chris Lambert

'We are opening a Pandora's box when we put notations by records. Let each era speak for itself.--Don Miller, Emeryville, Calif.'

* Dave Kindred's column regarding the congressional hearings on steroids in baseball (TSN, April 1) was right on the money. Mark McGwire blew the chance to be a hero and come clean with the truth. I hope all of the cheaters are exposed and their records are banished from the record books.--Paul Ettlinger, Yardley, Pa.

* In your list of baseball's 50 best players (TSN, April 8), there is only one Atlanta Brave in the top 30. That player, Tim Hudson, was not even on the team last year. I think this proves how great a manager Bobby Cox really is. --Jonathan Smith, Ormond Beach, Fla.

* It's great to see yet another sports columnist touch on the futility of the Cubs (TSN, April 8), especially one who hails from St. Louis. The sincerity is palpable. If Joe Buck needs an explanation as to what really brought down the Cubs last year, simply look at the injuries to their pitching staff.--Jay Hester, Ann Arbor, Mich.

* What I've learned from Tricia Garner's "Playing Pickup" (TSN, April 1): Even women who go to cheesy singles events set up by sports teams have no interest in a regular guy who likes sports. Do not attempt to engage them in conversation, as you'll get dismissed immediately. This very nice but admittedly "socially inept" guy now will go adopt nine more cats.--Chris Lambert, Indianapolis
