Top 5: candidates to visit Juan Gonzalez at his usual hangout, the disabled list, by May Day

Sporting News, The,  April 15, 2005  by Stan McNeal

1 J.D. Drew, Dodgers. Perhaps we'll look back on 2004 as the first season Drew did not go on the disabled list, not the only season. But don't count on it. There have been too many parts that have failed him in his six big-league seasons, including his knee, neck, back, ankle, wrist, hamstring, oblique muscle and quadriceps.

2 Jose Reyes, Mets. Since arriving in the majors a day before his 20th birthday in 2003, he has missed more games because of injury than he has played. Unfortunately, moving back to shortstop is unlikely to improve his durability.

3 Ken Griffey, Reds. Sure, he has been known to be a pain to reporters and fans, but it still doesn't seem fair that his potential for monster career numbers never will be fully realized. After all, not even Jose Canseco questions Griffey's talent as being anything but pure.

4 Kerry Wood, Cubs. It can't be easy managing when you never seem to know when you'll have the services of one of your most important players. Dusty Baker must be getting used to it, though. Mark Prior (elbow) already is on the D.L., and Wood was slowed in spring training by back and shoulder tightness.

5 Mike Sweeney, Royals. The veteran first baseman/DH says he hasn't been in this good a shape in years, but he still has a history of back problems that have cost him significant time the past few seasons.
