Talking in circles
Sporting News, The, April 15, 2005
Join us in the office as we discuss the latest sports news and views. This week's question: What's wrong with Dale Earnhardt Jr. this season?
Paul Grant: OK, I'll bite. You renovate the entire team in the offseason and expect to have the same results? I think somebody at DEI has been standing too close to the catchcan man during refills.
Steve Greenberg: Something's wrong with Dale Earnhardt Jr. this season?
Matt Crossman: Thanks for playing, Steve. If we're still talking about this at the end of May, it'll be worth it for Earnhardt Nation to start freaking out. Otherwise, they need to relax.

Grant: Is relaxing allowed in a 26-race season? The guy's got to get it going or else he'll risk becoming the next Kyle Petty--big name, little results.
Greenberg: Big LAST name, anyway.
Crossman: Easy, now. Kyle hasn't won since, what, 1995? And Junior hasn't won since, what, November?
Greenberg: Bottom line is Junior smells like a man who's comfortable in his own skin. Who's comfortable on other people's skin--I've seen the Drakkar ads. Not to mention the pictures of Junior surrounded by Playboy bunnies. Yeah, he's up at night worrying about the Chase.
Grant: He should be. If Junior wins a race between now and Talladega, I'll do a back flip off my driver's-side door. Essentially, he's running with Michael Waltrip's team and car. How many wins did Waltrip have last year? Exactly. Junior is the superior driver, no question, but you're only as good as your team.
Greenberg: I probably don't say it enough, but I feel the same way about you guys.
Crossman: Lighten up, Francises. We've only had five races. Junior dang near won the 500. Yeah, he stunk at Vegas, but he always does. Junior might smell like a man comfortable in his own skin, but you guys just smell.
