Topic: RSS FeedNASCAR is ripe for a split, but no one wants to fumble
Sporting News, The, April 16, 2001 by Lee Spencer
Now that I'm totally frustrated, I think I'll visit with NASCAR president Mike Helton. My series is losing steam, but I want him to know I'm out here. So what about another series?
"I think it is something you always have to be conscious of," Helton says. "But I don't think it's as simple as looking at what exists and recreating that. This is the result of a lot of effort by three generations to make it what it is today."
Is it just me, or are you having trouble finding that XFL game, too?

We've got Winston Cup racing covered from A to Z with a racing glossary at sportingnews.com/nascar. Racing has a language all its own, and Roger Kuznia takes you inside the terms you often hear but might not understand. He also has plenty of fun. Let us know what you think--and tell us what terms we need to add.

Dale Jarrett and crew chief Todd Parrott obviously have the new tires and pretty much everything else figured out on their Ford Taurus. Jarrett's win at Martinsville was his first ever at the track, his second in a row for the season and third in four races. "Do they still give a clock here?" Jarrett said, referring to the track's tradition of awarding the winner with a grandfather clock. "Cool, we'll find a place for it." While he's at it, he might want to make room for his second Winston Cup trophy. Sure, it's early, but this team looks even better than when Jarrett won the title in 1999. It has the most powerful motors in the garage, an incredibly innovative engineering department and the best pit crew money can buy.... Did you notice Fords finished 1-2-3 at Martinsville? The crying has stopped. Let's see what happens next weekend at Talladega.... Dodge team owner Bill Davis says he would endorse the installation of data recorders in Winston Cup cars. "I can't imagine a negative to that," Davis says. "It would suit the same purpose as on airplanes, to learn for the future from it." When series director Gary Nelson was asked if black boxes soon could become mandatory, he replied, "I can't get a clear reading from my crystal ball." Expect the cars to be equipped with battery-operated black boxes sometime this season.... Mark Martin assisted in penning the book NASCAR for Dummies, and after his problems at Martinsville, he might send copies to crew members and ask them to review the section on alternators. Martin was running on 9 volts instead of the normal 13 when his day ended after he cut a left-front tire on lap 270 of 500.... Ricky Rudd had his best nm of the season, though he couldn't hold off Jarrett at the end and finished second. Rudd overcame a cut brake line to battle for the win and showed he'll eventually get his Robert Yates car in victory lane.... Jeff Burton will settle for his third-place finish at Martinsville--his first top-five of the season. It's too late to chase the Cup but not too late to turn things around.... Former open-wheelers Dave Blaney, Tony Stewart and Jerry Nadeau competed against the regulars in the Modified Super DIRT Series last Saturday night at The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway. Stewart, 29, says he is trying a new, "healthy" diet. He says being on the road six days a week doesn't afford him time to incorporate an exercise program into his routine, so improving his diet is the best defense.
