A safety net for high schoolers

Sporting News, The, May 6, 2002 by Mike DeCourcy

3-POINTERS

1 A buck and change. NCAA honchos are pondering a plan that would allow athletes to get loans based on potential earnings. Because 99 percent of college bailers think they're NBA-bound, that s asking for trouble.

2 A buck and no change. Another possibility: Kids can play for pay for one year, then sit out a year before entering college with years of eligibility remaining. Isn't that called transferring from Michigan?

3 Why we love college basketball. Chris Wilcox may be a lottery pick with gobs of potential, but his butt was in the back seat behind Juan Dixon and Lonny Baxter at Maryland, where it belonged.--Steve Greenberg
